Day 1: The tour starts by taking you off the beaten path to experience Iceland’s natural gems in the comfort of our 4x4 trucks. Our first destination is by the volcano Hengill, where we stop at the Nesjavellir Geothermal Plant, which provides Reykjavík with both hot water and electricity in one of the world’s most environmentally friendly manner. Then we drive to beautiful Þingvellir, where Iceland’s first parliament “Alþingi” was established in 930 AD. Next, we cross the mountain road of Lyngdalsheiði to reach the famous Geysir. From Geysir, it’s only a short drive to Iceland’s best known waterfall, Gullfoss, which cascades down 32 meters into the mighty glacial river Hvita. After seeing Gullfoss up close and listening to its roaring thunder, we drive a mountain track to Iceland’s second largest glacier, Langjokull. Then we travel to Þjórsárdalur valley, stopping at Hjalparfoss waterfall,Þjóðveldisbær viking house. and Háifoss waterfall.
Day 2: From our hotel, we drive through beautiful mountains and by the explosion crater Ljótipollur, before reaching Landmannalaugar. At Landmannalaugar, we go for a short hike before we relax and bathe in the warm natural pond next to a lava field. From Landmannalaugar we drive through the beautiful glacier valleys to Eldgja,” the fire canyon” on our way to the Laki. This area has the two largest lava fields which have flowed in historic times.
Day 3: We start our day heading east and cross Skeidarársandur, a vast tract of black sand formed by volcano eruptions and powerful floods in glacial rivers. In Skaftafell National Park, a beautiful alpine region set against the glacier Oraefajokull, with Iceland’s highest peak Hvannadalshnjúkur. We take a hike to the Svartifoss
waterfall with its impressive basalt pillars and after a short drive another hike to glacier Svínafellsjökull. From Skaftafell we head for the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier where we will find the clear waters and shimmering icebergs of the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon. A boat trip in the glacier lagoon will top the day before we return to the hotel.
Day 4: On this day we head west to Vik where we will see the beautiful needles Reynisdrangar out at sea as unique pillars in the sea cliffs ashore. The day continues with a visit to Dyrholaey, a spectacular arch-shaped rock mass, the famous Icelandic black beaches, and the stunning waterfalls Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss.
Day 5: We head back to the mountains driving by the mountain Einhyrningur (the unicorn) to our first stop by the ferocious canyon where the glacier river Markarfljót flows through. Then the journey takes us to the beautiful lake Álftavatn and the geothermal area of Hrafntinnusker. The mountain track continues through deserts and lava fields towards the famous and active volcano Hekla which we will see up close and personal before we drive down form the mountains through fertile farmlands back to Reykjavík.
